MichaelJoaquin Grey

Michael Joaquin Grey makes light work of dense information through artworks that map data in tactile and beautiful ways. In a career spanning over 20 years, Grey has explored ways of visually representing biochemical, network and information structures.

With a thriving international gallery career well underway, Grey stepped aside from institutional art with his invention ZOOB, a “building block” toy that is based around the chemistry and anatomy of the human body. It’s a sort of postmodern LEGO that accommodates for recent developments in genetics and biochemistry. Where LEGO was best suited to building walls and fortresses, ZOOB is geared towards the modelling of dynamic and living systems - capable of emulating everything from the nucleotide structure of a double helix to the bone structure of a human hand.

It’s all part of a career that has defied the orthodoxies of contemporary art practice. Michael’s early visualisation works were groundbreaking - they were some of the first attempts to reconcile research into natural systems with the economic and visual demands of the art world. His works reflect the importance of ‘serious play’ in the development of creative minds - in the same way that Froebel toys influenced a generation of modernist architecture, ZOOB offers an alternative way of building objects and ideas.
