Jonathan Ward has pursued car design to its extreme edge - creating a bespoke range of utility vehicles built for wild terrain and insurmountable bank balances. His Los Angeles based company ICON developed out of a business servicing one of the most iconic cars of the 20th century - the Toyota FJ Landcruiser.
Ward found that the the restoration of classic utility vehicles lacked the craftsmanship that coupes and sports cars were receiving. Applying functional, hard-wearing design right down to the smallest of details, ICON have produced a small range of 4x4 vehicles that aim to be greater than the sum of their parts.
Re-imagining a variety of classic designs with modern materials, Ward’s designs have developed a cult following in more than just automotive circles. They are fascinating bricolages of technology, metalwork and various materials and surfaces - ultimately reflecting the obsessive mind of their maker. Don’t be fooled by their good looks - Icon 4x4’s are ultimately designed to meet the demands of long, arduous lives as off-road vehicles.
