Chunky Move is a Melbourne based contemporary dance company founded in 1995 by Artistic Director Gideon Obarzanek. Since conception Chunky Move has earned an international reputation for producing impressively distinctive dance performances, that at times seemingly defy the genre of contemporary dance. Their works have played festivals and theatres around the world, and they have also won numerous local and international awards.
Mortal Engine, Chunky Move’s latest show, is a dance, video, music and laser spectacular. The performance utilises movement and sound responsive projections to portray an ever-shifting world in which the limits of the human body are an illusion. The work is a visual feast of computer generated shadowy figures, crackling lights and lasers, that morph into human figures and more. While not relying on a traditional narrative, Mortal Engine’s
choreography focuses on an unfamiliar landscape where bodies search to
connect, repel and evolve with others and themselves. While the performance relies heavily on technology and effects, the underlying theme of the work is undoubtedly very human.
InFrame.tv caught up with Gideon Obarzanek, during a final rehearsal for Mortal Engine’s Melbourne season, to chat about Chunky Move and the inner mechanics of the show.
